We were lucky to catch up with Jason Colleran recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason , thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Kinetic Arm was born out of my personal experience as an athlete and the challenges I faced with arm injuries. From the moment I picked up a baseball at the age of four, the sport became my passion. I was fortunate to be sponsored by my community because my family couldn’t afford the costs. My coaches were more than just instructors – they were mentors and role models who deeply influenced my life. Being part of a team meant everything to me, and as I got older and became an athlete I saw baseball as my ticket to college and a way to potentially take care of my family. Baseball represented my dreams and aspirations, but as I got older I began to face challenges that ultimately altered the course of my life.
By the time I reached my early teens, like many young athletes I was grappling with persistent arm pain. I followed all the training advice my coaches gave me—working on my mechanics, staying dedicated to training, and even resorting to medication and injections to manage the pain. I pushed through it all the way up to college, driven by the hope of a successful baseball career until the overuse injuries eventually caught up with me. Unfortunately, during a critical scouting day in college, I suffered a devastating hamstring injury that ended my career. This moment was a crushing blow, both physically and emotionally as I missed the opportunity I was preparing for my whole life. This forced me to confront the reality that years of overuse injuries had taken their toll on my body.
In the aftermath of that injury, I felt lost. I was devastated but also determined to understand what had gone wrong. Why had my body broken down in such a way? How could a hamstring injury, seemingly unrelated to the arm pain I had been dealing with for years, be the reason my career ended. This quest for answers ignited my passion for biomechanics and injury prevention. I went back to school, became a strength coach, and dove deeply into the study of resistance mechanics and muscle activation techniques. It was during this time that I started to grasp the interconnectedness of the body—how my arm injuries had led to compensatory patterns that ultimately caused my hamstring injury. This realization was a turning point that reshaped my career.
As I began working with athletes as a biomechanics consultant, helping clients assess neuromuscular and musculoskeletal dysfunctions to help athletes maximize performance and minimize injury risks. This extensive knowledge of anatomical function gave me the privilege and opportunity to work with world-class athletes in MLB, NBA, NFL, UFC, and ATP and beyond including legends like Charles Barkley and Matt Ryan.
Despite my shift in career, I couldn’t ignore the arm injury epidemic , especially in baseball. In my time as a consultant, I saw a troubling pattern: many young athletes were facing the same arm injuries that had derailed my career. I knew firsthand how devastating these injuries could be, and it broke my heart to see so many promising careers cut short. It became clear to me that the traditional approaches to injury prevention were not enough. Despite advancements in training and monitoring, arm injuries continued to rise across all levels of sports.
Then, one day, I stumbled upon an ad titled “The Sleeve that is Saving Baseball.” It highlighted a sensor measuring dynamic stress and elbow torque during throwing. This sparked a lightbulb moment for me. With my background in biomechanics, I understood that peak stress on the arm occurs in vulnerable ranges where muscles cant effectively stabilize joints. It’s this repeated stress that leads to microtears, fatigue, pain, and eventually, overuse injuries. I realized I could create a product that offered a unique approach to arm injury prevention—one that would offer multi-directional support not only for the elbow but also the shoulder, knowing how crucial it is to protect both joints due to heir interconnected roles in dynamic movements like throwing, swinging, hitting and serving to offload dynamic arm stress, a solution that no one had successfully achieved before.
I was filled with excitement and determination. I envisioned a device that could provide multi-directional support for both the elbow and shoulder, addressing the critical needs of young athletes engaged in repetitive, high-stress activities. Motivated by my desire to prevent others from experiencing the same pain and setbacks, I purchased an industrial sewing machine and partnered with an engineer to develop my first prototype, originally called “The Perfect Arm.”
Testing it in my facility, I used the Motus sensor to collect data and measure its effectiveness. The results were promising: we saw a reduction in arm stress of up to 30%. Over the next few years, I refined the design, making adjustments for improved adjustability, durability, and user-friendliness. Eventually, I filed for multiple patents, leading to the creation of the K1 Dynamic Arm Stabilizing Brace, which was validated by medical professionals and supported by data.
I knew we were onto something special when the Kinetic Arm launched in 2020 at the ABCA convention in Nashville and won “Best of Show.” This recognition, coupled with the enthusiastic feedback from athletes and coaches who reported reduced fatigue and pain and optimized performance, solidified not only the data but my belief that we were solving a significant problem in the world of sports.
While the pandemic slowed our momentum, we pivoted to e-commerce and social media marketing and slowly but surely, the product began gaining traction. The positive feedback from athletes of all ages and levels was inspiring – reporting less pain, improved performance, and quicker recovery times. People started becoming raving fans posting about our product and wanting to join as an affiliate to increase our brand awareness – because they were so relieved to find a product that worked and helped them.
The more we sold, and the more raving customers we acquired the more we began to attract more and more organic attention from not only influencers within the sports community but with top orthopedic surgeons and medical professionals and scientists.
What excites me the most is the idea that the Kinetic Arm is more than just a product; it’s a movement towards redefining how we think about arm health in sports. I’m driven by the desire to help athletes stay active, pain-free, and capable of pursuing their passions without setbacks. The Kinetic Arm represents a new frontier in arm protection—one that offers unrestricted support and empowers individuals to perform at their best.
In summary, the inception of Kinetic Arm stemmed from my personal journey through injury, education, and a relentless pursuit of solutions. It is about leveraging my expertise to create a meaningful impact and inspire others to protect their arm health, ultimately helping them continue doing what they love for years to come.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jason Colleran, and I am the inventor and founder of the Kinetic Arm. With over 20 years of experience in athlete development and biomechanics, I’ve dedicated my career to preventing the kinds of injuries that ended my own baseball journey. Having personally experienced the devastating toll of overuse injuries, I developed the Kinetic Arm to address the arm injury epidemic in sports.
My love for baseball started at age four. I was fortunate to be sponsored by my community because my family couldn’t afford the costs. Baseball was more than a game to me—it was my way to a college scholarship and a means to support my family. My coaches became mentors who shaped my life, and I pushed myself through the pain, taking medications and injections to keep playing despite chronic arm issues. Eventually, a severe hamstring injury in college ended my career and shattered the future I’d worked so hard for.
That setback, however, became the catalyst for my new passion—understanding why injuries happen and how to prevent them. I immersed myself in the study of biomechanics, resistance mechanics, and muscle activation techniques, and I discovered the interconnectedness of the body. My hamstring injury wasn’t isolated—it was the result of compensatory patterns created by years of arm overuse. This insight shaped my career, and I became a biomechanics consultant, working with elite athletes across MLB, NFL, UFC, and ATP.
Despite my success as a consultant, I couldn’t shake the growing arm injury crisis, especially in baseball. Inspired by my own experience and fueled by the stories of countless athletes facing similar challenges, I set out to create a solution. Combining my expertise in biomechanics with my passion for injury prevention, I developed the Kinetic Arm, a product specifically designed to offload dynamic arm stress and prevent overuse injuries.
Unlike traditional braces or sleeves, the Kinetic Arm is scientifically proven to offload dynamic arm stress and provide support to both the elbow and shoulder. Our multi-patented MuscleWeb® technology allows athletes to perform at their best while reducing the strain that leads to injury. It’s a dynamic stabilizer that helps optimize mechanics, enhances performance, and aids in recovery.
In 2022, we rebranded as Kinetic Arm and introduced our flagship product, the K2 BioKinetic Sleeve. Available in both adult and youth sizes, the K2 Sleeve quickly became our best-seller, winning “Best of Show” at the ABCA convention in Chicago. Its adoption by elite programs in MLB, MiLB, NPB, NFL, and ATP marked a significant milestone, validating its effectiveness across a wide range of professional sports.
The K2 Sleeve has proven to be an easy-to-wear solution, offering dynamic support for repetitive movements in sports like baseball, softball, football, volleyball, tennis, and golf. But its reach has extended far beyond just athletics. People in non-sporting professions, such as painters and delivery workers, are now using the sleeve to reduce arm strain during their daily tasks.
In 2023, our journey reached another pivotal moment when the University of Texas at Tyler published research proving the effectiveness of the Kinetic Arm in offloading dynamic arm stress and facilitating faster recovery for athletes with severe injuries, such as torn labrums. This research confirmed what we had long believed—that our multi-patented MuscleWeb® Activated Stabilizing Technology could provide the crucial support athletes need to protect both their elbows and shoulders without restricting movement.
Behind the success of the Kinetic Arm lies over a decade of research and testing. These arm stabilizers are backed by published science, demonstrating their ability to offload dynamic arm stress, reduce fatigue and pain, and prevent overuse injuries. Knowing that our product is making a difference for people of all ages and activity levels—from elite athletes to everyday workers—brings me immense pride.
What excites me most is the mission that drives us: to inspire and protect billions of people worldwide by offering the highest standard in dynamic arm support. We are committed to helping people maintain their arm health, whether in sports or daily life, so they can pursue their passions without the setbacks of injury or pain.
The Kinetic Arm represents a new era in arm protection. It offers unrestricted, dynamic support that allows individuals to stay active and healthy while protecting their arms from the stresses of repetitive movements. Over the years, I’ve received countless letters from athletes, parents, and coaches sharing how the Kinetic Arm has helped alleviate pain, speed up recovery, avoid surgery, and keep athletes in the game. These heartfelt testimonials reinforce why I started this journey, and knowing that our product is helping so many people extend their careers and stay in the activities they love means the world to me.
This is just the beginning of what we aim to accomplish. The Kinetic Arm is not just about injury prevention—it’s about enabling people to live and perform at their best for years to come.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
The story of how I met my co-founder and wife, Saechelle, is one that many small business owners and creative innovators might find familiar—a mix of chance, shared passion, and mutual respect. We first met at a work event, both there with different professional goals, but what initially connected us was our shared interest in business strategy and innovation. At that time, Saechelle had her own business in the aesthetics and medical device field, and our conversation naturally gravitated toward the challenges and rewards of running a business. We found common ground in navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship and all the things that keep small business owners up at night.
We met again shortly after for a business lunch, thinking we might help each other through networking. I shared my idea for the Kinetic Arm, though at the time, it was still in the prototype stage. I could tell she was a bit skeptical—it’s not every day someone tells you they’re developing an entirely new kind of arm stabilizer. But Saechelle’s openness to new ideas and her curiosity drove her to visit my facility to see the prototype for herself.
That was the turning point. As soon as she saw it in action, everything changed. With her background in medical device sales, she immediately recognized the potential and innovation behind the Kinetic Arm. This wasn’t just another support brace—it was the first of its kind to provide dynamic stabilization for both the elbow and shoulder without limiting movement. Her belief in the product gave me the confidence I needed to move forward. She encouraged me to push beyond my fears of failing or having the idea stolen, and to take the Kinetic Arm to market, starting with trade shows.
As our personal relationship grew, so did our partnership in business. Saechelle’s unwavering support and expertise played a huge role in launching the Kinetic Arm. She helped prepare for our first big trade show at the ABCA convention in 2020, where we were a small, scrappy team with a booth that we could barely afford. But the hard work paid off—our product won “Best of Show,” and that moment opened the door to so many new opportunities.
For small business owners and creative innovators, our story is a reminder that you don’t always have to go it alone. Sometimes, the best partnerships are built on a shared belief in a vision. Having a co-founder who challenges you, supports you, and brings a different skill set to the table can make all the difference. Saechelle eventually sold her own business and joined Kinetic Arm full-time because we both saw the incredible potential in what we were building together.
Starting a business, especially when you’re introducing something new and unfamiliar to the market, isn’t easy. It takes persistence, belief, and sometimes, having someone by your side who shares your vision and pushes you to go further than you thought you could. For us, it was about combining our individual strengths—my focus on product innovation and Saechelle’s expertise in sales and marketing—to create something truly impactful.
Our journey together, both personally and professionally, has shown us that success isn’t just about having a great idea. It’s about believing in that idea enough to invest your time, energy, and sometimes everything you have into it. Surround yourself with people who believe in what you’re doing, who complement your strengths, and who are willing to weather the ups and downs with you. That’s where the real magic happens.
